Owensboro avoids sweep

Owensboro avoided being swept by Marion Sunday, taking the third contest of a three-game set 6-1, handing Webster County native Clay Thornberry a loss in his first appearance of the season.

The Oilers scored four off Thornberry in the fourth with the long ball. League leader Cory Pack started the scoring with a his eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot. The next two batters, Jay Hedges and Tyler Choate, each added solo home runs. 
Kyle Bugg came on in relief of Thornberry in the fourth to shut down the Oilers for three innings before Haskell Fink added another home run in the eighth, this time off reliever Mike Rizzuto. The Oilers added another run in the ninth off Josh Reynolds.
Marion's lone score came in the ninth when Drew Williams hit a sacrifice fly to score Drew Barrett, who led off the inning by reaching on an error.
The Bobcats had only four hits on the night, one each from Andrew Harris, Pat Murphy, Mike DeSanto and Austin Messersmith. Rob Dyer went 0-for3, falling to second in the league batting with a .363 average.
For the Oilers, Nathan Humphery pitched seven innings for his first win of the season against three losses. With a Tradewater loss, Owensboro retook first place in the KIT League standings.
Marion finishes its home record against the Oilers at 2-3.
